Mammoth is located in Central California. Located in the Inyo National Forest and Mono County, Mammoth Lakes is a mountain community tucked into the Sierras surrounded by forest, lakes and filled with amazing sights to see.
The resort as we know it today was founded by Dave McCoy in the 1950's. Mr. McCoy started with a rope tow that pulled skiers up the hill using a gasoline powered engine. Today Mammoth is one of the largest ski resorts in the United States. The ski season starts the 2nd Thursday of November and lasts until April 30. On good years the season can extend as late as July 4th.
In the summer, Mammoth is a fishing haven, and has now grown to be one of the most popular places to mountain bike. While many think of Mammoth as a "ski" resort, it is actually a 4 season resort with skiing being just one aspect. Fisherman know Mammoth for its lakes stocked with trout, and golfers love our courses. Families come all year round to soak up this relaxing and breathtakingly beautiful alpine environment.
The majority of Mammoth visitors take the highways and drive. Located just off Highway 395 it takes about 5.5 hours from Los Angeles and 3.5 hours from the Reno Nevada area. Over the years, more and more people are coming from the San Francisco area as we are especially easy to get to when you drive from the west, through Yosemite (our neighbor) via Highway 120 which is open after the snow melts.
When you come to Mammoth in the winter, you must carry tire chains even if the weather forecast looks sunny. You never know for sure in Mammoth. 4WD vehicles are preferred and you still should have chains for those, and "mud and snow" tires are preferred on all vehicles.
Most of the people who come to Mammoth, work all day, leave in the afternoon and arrive around 10:00 PM so they don't miss a day of work, and then have the rest of their time as vacation time, not drive time. It is a straight shot and except for a couple of important sights, there isn't much to see along the way. Many of the visitors in winter come every weekend, and our ski teams are made up of Southern California families.
The airline that flies to the Mammoth Yosemite airport (MMH) is Horizon run by Alaska Airlines. All other airlines contract with them to fly under their name.
When you're planning your vacation you can either fly direct to Mammoth, or many will take a plane from Los Angeles. Horizon / Alaska Air is a good choice to get to Mammoth. Our partners offer savings when you book in advance. Flights may originate from major cities, but they stop and pick up for direct flights from Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco, Reno, and San Diego. (Subject to change) Flight times change depending on the seasons. They run more often during the winter and just once a day during the summer months. The most popular days to fly are on Thursday and Sunday.
When you land, you will want toget a rental car at Los Angeles, CA International Airport or if you fly direct to Mammoth, take one of the taxis that will be waiting for you. Book your rental car in advance as there is a limited supply. If you're one of our customers, we will be glad to assist you.
Mammoth offers a variety of transportation options once you get to town. In reality, you won't really need your car once you get to your lodging as there are free shuttles that run day and night from most lodging properties. Your reservation agent can tell you where the closest stop is to your property. Taxi service is also available for the hard to reach places, or after hours when a shuttle may not be running. Mammoth believes in using your "feet first" so don't be afraid to walk a block or two to the grocery store, movie theaters or the Village.
Many of our visitors can't do without their cars at their fingertips. If you fly in, you may want to get a rental car while in Mammoth. It is always an option. You will want to be sure your rental car has mud and snow tires and 4 wheel drive if you're going to be here during one of our fabulous big winters.
